This application note describes the determination of moisture content in polymeric and plastic materials using Karl Fischer titration. Particular attention is given to sample preparation and solubility considerations, as many polymers cannot be analyzed by direct injection into standard Karl Fischer reagent systems.

Sample Preparation and Solubility Considerations

Polymer and plastic materials often present challenges for direct Karl Fischer analysis due to limited solubility, slow moisture release, or physical matrix effects. In some cases, dissolution in suitable solvents may be possible, allowing direct Karl Fischer titration when a homogeneous phase is achieved.

When dissolution is incomplete or impractical, alternative sample introduction techniques should be considered to ensure quantitative moisture transfer and reliable analytical results.
